God made everything on Earth, including Grasshopper Mice so let’s see what we are able to learn about them . . .
· When you think about animals which are ferocious predators, you typically do not picture tiny mice . . . but after reading this, you will!
- · Grasshopper Mice are intimidating predators and eat other mice, rats, and bugs like crickets and grasshoppers, AND attack venomous creatures like spiders, scorpions, millipedes, and even snakes!
- · Not only do they attack and eat venomous creatures, Grasshopper Mice howl like wolves when they hunt – this is how they got their other name – Werewolf Mice – especially since they hunt at night!
- · They have evolved to be immune to the venom of the creatures they hunt – in fact not only are they immune to the venom from the bark scorpion (one of their favorite foods), but they have evolved so the venom from the scorpion acts as a painkiller for the mice!
- · Since Grasshopper Mice are immune to the venom of scorpions, snakes, and spiders, these creatures do not try to hunt the ferocious, scary, mighty Grasshopper Mice!
· What do you think is the most interesting thing about Grasshopper Mice?
Activity to Make the Point & Have Fun
Grasshopper Mice look like any regular, little, mouse . . . but they are very different from other mice. These tiny mice are fearless and ferocious hunters! To help us remember how God helps us when we are afraid, let’s make a colorful project. You will need the following . . .
- · Rocks
- · Glow-in-the-dark paint
- · Bible
Directions – 1. Read Deuteronomy 31:8 2. Write the verse, part of the verse, or draw a picture which will help you remember the verse on your stone with the paint 3. Let it dry 4. Put it in your room where you will see it and remember God is with you.
As you make your rock, talk about how God knew what He was doing when He created Grasshopper Mice. God created them to be fearless hunters. You are able to be fearless, too, because God has promised to always be with you.
Think About This . . .
“At this moment it seems as though science will never be able to raise the curtain on the mystery of creation. For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.” – Robert Jastrow, astronomer, planetary physicist, NASA scientist
You will learn more about these very surprising mice in my book, Grasshopper Mice, Laughing Kookaburras, Jawfish & More!, and are able to buy it at this link.
