Found only in the waters around Bali and Ambon Island, Indonesia, is the Psychedelic Frogfish. They make me think of Genesis 1:20 – “And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures.”
Let’s see how Psychedelic Frogfish show us they are one of the “living creatures” God put in the waters –
- · Psychedelic Frogfish are one of the rarest fish in the sea – which also makes them one of the most difficult to find fish in the sea.
- · The white swirls on an orange/ yellow/ peach background give each and every Psychedelic Frogfish their own, unique look – like our fingerprints are each unique for us.
- · These unique swirls also help provide camouflage for Psychedelic Frogfish as they wait among the coral to find a tasty meal.
- · Psychedelic Frogfish are fish, so you may think they move by swimming – but they do not. They either use their fins to “walk” along the bottom of the sea, or they use their fins to push themselves off the sea floor/coral, and then shoot air through their gills to bounce – yes, bounce, along the bottom of the sea!
- · The Psychedelic Frogfish has a “frill” around its cheeks and chin – we think it is to help them tell where they are; much like a cat uses its whiskers, but since we do not know very much about them yet, we are not sure why they have a frill.
- · Mom Psychedelic Frogfish lay about 220 eggs, which they then hold by wrapping their fins around the eggs until they hatch.
What do you think is the most surprising and cool thing about Psychedelic Frogfish?
Activity to Make the Point & Have Fun!
A Psychedelic Frogfish bounces along the bottom of the sea, so of course we are going to do a project with a bouncy beach ball – you will need . . .
- · A beachball
- · Permanent ink markers
Directions – 1. Let each person think of a silly thing for everyone to do – dance a silly dance, make a silly face, etc. 2. Write the silly things on the beachball. 3. Toss the ball to someone – whatever silly thing their right thumb is touching – or closest to – is the thing they will do 4. Be sure everyone has a turn.
As you play this game together, talk about how God designed and created each animal and person on this planet – including the very interesting (even silly looking and acting) Psychedelic Frogfish. Think about the thought God put into His design of everything and everyone – including you.
Think About This . . .
